Rustic Stone Fireplaces
In days past the fireplace was really all about function - heat and
cooking. Today, they are built, used and admired as much for their decorative
impact as for their heat. Having a fireplace in a home, office or condo
is widely considered a plus today. While adding one may not be easy
or super inexpensive, it can be well worth it. (Today, there are also
other options, such as adding a portable or electric fireplace).
Fireplaces For Mountain Homes and Cabins
In keeping will the feel of the "Great Outdoors" most fireplaces
included in mountain homes and cabins have a more rustic feel. Stone
and timber are commonly used and can achieve a rustic feel in a variety
of shapes.
Making a New Fireplace, That Looks "Old"
Even in newly built homes, you can achieve the look of a well-used,
classic rustic fireplace using new materials. One great way to achieve
this look is to have the mortar holding the rocks together be hidden
from view. This allows for the appearance that the stones have all been
piled on top of each other. Complementing this look is a rough edge
rock hearth. Make the hearth level with the floor to complete the look.
The mantel can also be made of stone, making a wonderful place to set
decorations.
